Homework, due 02/27/2007:
Sampling:
You visit an amusement park that has a "mosh pit" filled with yellow foam balls. You are curious about how many balls are in the pit. The park has provided a 'circulation system' in the pit, so that any added balls are quickly randomly distributed in the pit.
Gus, the operator, doesn't know how many yellow balls are in the pit. But the park just got a shipment of 3000 red balls, and they are thinking about just throwing in the red balls when--
"Wait!" you shout. "I think I can try to figure out how many yellow balls are in the pit, without counting every last yellow ball in the pit."
How would you do it? Write out your answer in complete sentences, and show what strategy and calculations you would do. Tomorrow we will work with numbers, so you won't be getting a final answer tonight.
