Due 11/27/2006: The Fallout Shelter Project.
Deliverables:
(1) your scaled drawings, with scale legend, from at least two angles
(2) lists of construction needs, food, supplies, and entertainment; also think about post-shelter needs
(3) your budget of $25,000 and how you spent it. You need costs for labor, equipment, construction—everything except the water and air systems.
**********Rubric**************
Design your own fallout shelter
Your shelter living space will be 6 feet by 9 feet by 8 feet high. You won't have electricity or running water. Your water will be rain water that is highly filtered to remove radioactive particles and will be piped in. You are permitted to have four human beings, counting yourself, in the shelter--no pets! You can't have electronic devices as there will be no electricity being delivered to your shelter (no electrical outlets).
You will need food and other items that you would need for a 30 day stay in the shelter. Remember, no electricity, so you will need food items that are non-perishable. What about tools you will need to be able to eat the food?
You will probably have to go to the bathroom at least once in thirty days...so what do you have to add to your shelter to accommodate this?
What about the sleeping arrangements? (Hint: a stackable bunk bed for three high plus an under the bunk bed trundle on the fourth takes up 3 x 6 foot of space--you could stack clothes and supplies on the beds while you are not sleeping on them.)
How are you going to know when it's safe to come back up? How much does a geiger counter cost?
What about tools, medical supplies, batteries?
What are you going to do while you are sitting in the dark, underground, for one month?
Construction note:
Three feet of concrete will shield against gamma particles; a lead lined door is also important (why?).
You will need to draw your fallout shelter TO SCALE on graph paper. In other words, you are drawing up plans, and will need to draw so that a length on your graph paper represents a (usually) larger length in reality. You will also need to make a list of things to bring with you.
You have a 'budget' of $25,000 to spend, so you will need to cost out the construction materials, the internal furnishings, the monitoring equipment, food, but not the air filtration or water purification systems. Everything else, you have to 'pay for.'
